Biography:
Mikhail Mordvinov Born in Moscow in 1977, Mikhail Mordvinov is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished pianists of his generation. His artistry combines technical brilliance with deep musical insight, captivating audiences worldwide. Mordvinov began playing the piano at age six and was accepted into the prestigious Gnessin School of Music in Moscow, where he studied under Tatiana Zelikman. He later graduated with honors from the Russian Gnessin Academy of Music, studying under Professor Vladimir Tropp. In 1997, he received the Heinrich Neuhaus Scholarship from the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation and was named “Student of the Year.” From 1999 to 2004, he pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Music and Drama in Hanover with Professor Bernd Goetzke. His career took off in 1996 when he won the Gold Medal and First Prize at the 12th International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau, followed by First Prize and a Special Award at the 6th International Franz Schubert Competition in Dortmund in 1997. Over the years, Mordvinov also received accolades at prestigious competitions, including the Long-Thibaud Competition (Paris, 2001), Piano-e-Competition (Minneapolis, 2006), and the International Piano Competition in Andorra (2006). Since 2000, Mordvinov has been a soloist with the Moscow State Academic Philharmonic Society, collaborating with leading conductors such as Yuri Simonov, Vladimir Verbitsky, Damian Iorio, and Dmitry Vassiliev. He has performed with renowned orchestras, including the Munich Philharmonic, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, Minneapolis Symphony, and the Ural Philharmonic. Mordvinov’s extensive repertoire spans from Baroque to contemporary music, encompassing works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. He has also premiered works by modern composers, including Chris Newman, Boris Filanovsky, Peter Ablinger, Johanna Doderer, Dmitry Kurliandsky, Alexandra Filonernko, and has a particular affinity for chamber music. His collaborators include soprano Simone Kermes, Nicole Chevalier, violinists Boris Brovtsyn and Nikolai Znaider, and cellists Raphael Wallfish and David Geringas. His recording career began in 1998 with an album featuring works by Schubert and Rachmaninoff (Thorophon). Subsequent recordings include Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Schubert-Liszt transcriptions (Genuin, 2014), Stravinsky’s Les Noces conducted by Teodor Currentzis (Sony Classical, 2016), and Piazzolla compositions with the Berlin Konzerthaus Chamber Orchestra. Mordvinov regularly appears at leading concert venues, including the Konzerthaus and Philharmonie Berlin, Munich’s Gasteig, Yokohama’s Minato Mirai Hall, Megaron in Athens, Atheneum in Bucharest, and Moscow’s Conservatory and Philharmonie. His festival appearances include the Chopin Festival in Paris, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Berlin International Music Festival, and Diaghilev Festival in Perm. In addition to his performing career, Mordvinov is a dedicated educator. From 2004 to 2011, he taught at the Gnessin Academy in Moscow. Since 2016, he has been a faculty member at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin and the International Anton Rubinstein Academy in Düsseldorf. He also conducts masterclasses worldwide.
